Hazy Shea - “Forever 21” Music Video

Hazy Shea paints a poignant picture of fading youth in “Forever 21.” The song and accompanying video invoke acute nostalgia and the feeling of introspection; we watch Hazy Shea wander down graffitied streets, buy a beer at a convenience store, and smoke a cigarette as ash flutters away in the wind.

Jon Hope - “Hands On The Clock”

Jon Hope uses silhouettes and light with an ease that enhances the impact of his song, “Hands on the Clock” (featuring J Stone). His nodding head in profile appears time after time, punctuating the video and centering our attention on Hope himself. As the lyrics reveal, the song largely focuses on his own growth and progress: “2020 was the year that myself I finally discovered.” It’s therefore only fitting that Hope is the star of the music video—he stands alone in virtually every shot, although he’s often depicted from the back or the side and nearly swallowed by shadow. One-shot, for example, shows Hope with his back against a wall.

To contrast this relative simplicity in the background, Zehailah’s voice takes the foreground.

J. Rose - “Livin Lavish”

As the title suggests, J. Rose’s “Livin Lavish” tells a story of success. The music video is replete with images of luxury, right down to the details: bottles of champagne and swirling cigar smoke, Cartier glasses, and cash strewn on the ground. Yet these superficial images are undergirded by the story told in the lyrics: “I put in work, I paid the cost.” Not only does the artist express that his newfound riches are hard-won, but he also presents each luxury as a symbol of his success.

Zazu Babii - “Derrick Henry”

His eyes capture a confidence that echoes through the rest of the video. He occupies the center of the screen in nearly every shot, while the other characters (often donning black ski masks that obscure their faces) fade to the background. While these peripheral figures wear heavy black clothing including sweatshirts and puffer coats, Zazu Babii himself is shirtless for much of the video.
