Mona Mula - “If I Fall”

Mona Mula’s “If I Fall” is sure to be stuck in your head after the first listen. Her first music video of the year has the same level of energy as the song, playing with colors and image distortion that disorients the viewer and produces an intoxicating effect. Mona Mula sports a number of makeup looks throughout the video, from reflective jewel-toned eye shadow that reflects the colorful light, to an experimental black liner and a fierce cat-eye. Her gaze into the camera throughout the video is intense, directly addressing her viewer with the message of the song. Props like mirrors, a ladder, and large speakers with long, tangled cords decorate the background, but Mona Mula is the center of the video, commanding your attention.

As the video description tells us, “Mona struggles with the fact that her favorite artists keep passing away. She wants to celebrate life by trying to live through life with the remembrance of these artists energy in the ‘sky/heavens.’” The tragedy captured in the lyrics is juxtaposed by the upbeat sound she’s created. But rather than detract from her message, the song’s catchiness adds to it. There’s a beauty in expressing her tribute to other artists through her own art—there’s no better way to pay homage than through a song.

Simultaneously, as Mona mourns the deaths of fellow artists, her song is fraught with the anxiety of “fall[ing]” too. The intensity of the visuals, with their flashing colors, blue and red lights, and spinning camera, mimics the intensity of fame and success. Money falls from the sky in one of the first shots, coming to rest around her. She’s tormented by her own feelings and fears: “Imma be alone, but it’s fine, it’s all in my head.” Yet despite grappling with heavy themes, Mona Mula manages to leave room for happiness. She expresses how “every second counts,” revealing a steadfast desire to live life to the fullest even as she’s seen so many others taken too soon. In “If I Fall,” Mona Mula wallows in a complexity that’s rare to come by, dealing with these difficult themes beautifully and effortlessly.
