Rasandra - “Broken Promises”

Rasandra’s newly released music video for “Broken Promises” is an ethereal meditation on a failed relationship. The lyrics exude frustration, with the echoing repetition of the word “regret” and the resignation in the singer’s eyes. The video is full of slow, panning scenes of desert and sky. It exudes an almost bohemian vibe; Rasandra is dressed in a flowing white dress and dainty gold jewelry, her curls loose and natural. The camera zooms in on white roses, string lights, the open door of a trailer, and dangling macrame wall hangings. It’s clear that the singer is wandering and alone, perseverating on all that went wrong, all the “broken promises” that she’d mistakenly believed. The calming visuals pair perfectly with her smooth voice; each word in the lyrics slides seamlessly into the next. Yet as aesthetically pleasing as the video is, the pain of the song stands out. The invocation of regret and losing trust is both touching and relatable: “I learned to never trust the promise again.” She goes on to remember the good times in the relationship, long before her fractured trust: “When I first saw you / thought you was the one.” She’s torn between her love for this person and her knowledge that it will only end in hurt and betrayal. Whether you’ve endured a love like this one or not, the music video’s stunning visuals paired with its regret-stricken lyrics have something for everyone.
