A: Marianata A. Sylvaince @iartsysam a self-taught illustrator from Jacmel, Haiti creates and works in NYC. Currently, a full-time illustration major at the School of Visual Arts, this emerging Artist creates images from “raw emotions” that are heavily influenced by her nationality and race.

A part of her practice involves exploring personalities, cultures, food, language & style. In her collection “Black Women”, the characters are reminders that being able to achieve anything that you desire is in arms reach. It is also a note to self that: I am a Boss, I am Elegant, I am capable, I am fierce, I am subtle, I am unconventional, I am thick, I am Black, I am a woman. Regardless if you identify as feminine or masculine, there is room to be who you truly are or want to be.

Q: What do you like to create in terms of the subject, of your art, the most? What about this interests you the most?

A: I create images from “raw emotions” that are heavily influenced by my nationality and race. A part of my practice involves exploring personalities, cultures, food, language & style.

Q: I see your art is very colorful, what colors do you like working with? What colors do you not like working with?

A: It really depends. I do not have a go-to palette, it changes every time.

Q: What do your giveaways entail and how can you enter these contests?

A: My giveaway products very from art to apparel. The rules and entry directions change every time. Although, it requires often that the participants follow both my account (iartsysam) and my Art+Fashion brand (@klbclothing)

Q: How would you describe your creative process?

A: My creative process is not particular. I do not start working on a digital piece until I find the perfect reference for what I have in mind. If I really like the progress I am making, I will finish the piece that day. If not, I will allow myself another 24 hours to go back at it and improve the work.

Q: What are your likes and dislikes with abstract work?

A: I do not have any likes and dislikes when it comes to abstract work. Some days I will love a piece, the next day I will not love the other, but I may work to improve it or leave it as it.

Q: Is there anything you want to experiment within your art? Any colors, subjects, mediums?

A: This year I am looking to dabble a bit more in-depth into some other mediums. Such as oil pastel, pen and ink, and color pencils. I am pretty excited about that.

Q: What got you interested in wanting to be a book illustrator? Is there any kind of genre you would want to do illustrations for? If so what?

A: I grew up reading a lot of books by Haitian writers who always had amazing visual and beautifully illustrated characters. I think I have been intrigued ever since. I am mostly interested in Illustrating more children's books, I feel as though does would be very fun.

Q: What is the most important thing you want to capture with your art?

A: In my collection “Black Women and their versatility ”, the characters are reminders that being able to achieve anything that you desire is in arms reach. It is also a note to self that: I am a Boss, I am Elegant, I am capable, I am fierce, I am subtle, I am unconventional, I am thick, I am Black, I am a woman. Regardless if you identify as feminine or masculine, there is room to be who you truly are or want to be. I love capturing the true essence of what it is to be a black woman and how we are perceived.

Q: What do you think you would be doing if you were not a Visual Artist?

A: I would be a marriage and family counselor. Which is a thought that I still explore. I think a lot about doing so after I get my degree from the School Of Visual Arts.
