HENNESSY - “I Get Lonely”
The music video for “I Get Lonely” starts out raw and real. We watch a group of friends seated cross-legged on a carpeted floor, picking up cards one by one. It’s a game where each card has an increasingly intimate question to be answered—from the last thing they lied to their mother about to whether they fall in love easily. The friends then disperse, with HENNESSY declining their invite to grab dinner. She’s the one who falls in love easily, and the camera follows her throughout the rest of the video. Her smiling face in the first scene shifts to one of sadness as she dons a sweatsuit and pours a glass of wine alone in her kitchen. As viewers, it feels like we’re in her home with her, gaining an intimate picture of her self-care practices. She stretches, journals, lights a smudge stick and eats ice cream straight from the carton. While this might look like a peaceful night in, the lyrics show us that she’s working through struggles of her own: “They say I’m trippin. I’m missin your company, missin you touchin me, thought it was meant to be.” Her face lights up momentarily as she plays a video game and cocoons herself in a blanket, but the lyrics “I get lonely” repeat in the background and remind us that things are not as good as they seem.
HENNESSY’s voice is smooth and lyrical when she sings, but it takes on a whole new life in the middle of the song as we watch her writing in a journal. She speaks the words that scroll across the screen: “She’s having trouble making eye contact; she’s uncomfortable.” It’s a combination of rap and spoken word poetry, and the verse gives us a peek into her head. The words come steadily in an almost monotonous rhythm, which juxtaposes with their intense vulnerability. Compared to the beginning of the song when the same woman was smiling and laughing with her friends, we are reminded that everyone is fighting their own battle within. It’s a meditation on self-care and loneliness that will certainly strike a chord.
