T’Swan - “FLAWS” #WhoIsTSwan
T’Swan opens up in “Flaws” with a vulnerability that’s hard to find these days. A diamond in the rough, this song will resonate from the first few lines: “Insecure about my gap tooth / Insecure about my weight, too much fast food. / I’m insecure about my swag cuz I don’t keep up with fashion.” The music video begins with the image of T’Swan rapping the lines to a microphone in a sparse basement, the camera zeroing in on his profile and his eyes closed in concentration. He continues his list of insecurities until he reaches the line, “I’m still learnin’ how to handle my flaws.” As T’Swan then marches through different areas of the house doing menial household tasks, the video takes on a stop-motion quality. His figure flashes from one side of the room to the next, from refrigerator to kitchen cabinets. The rap continues, with a firm and steady beat taking over the background. Even as the tempo increases and T’Swan’s lyrics grow quick and relentless, the underlying thread of “flaws” carries through the entire song. It’s practically a stream of consciousness, with the repetition of “I’m afraid” as T’Swan meditates on the issues he sees in himself and his generation.
“Flaws” offers what feels like exclusive access inside someone’s head; the lyrics are raw and real, covering everything from financial insecurity to discipline to self-criticism. He grapples with the pressures of having a child and striving for success within the music industry. Although the lyrics at first seem steeped in regret and anxieties, there are also gems of wisdom embedded in the song that are worth your attention. T’Swan appears to be speaking to both himself and his audience simultaneously. The sheer range of ideas that T’Swan manages to capture in this song is impressive in and of itself. Ultimately, as he looks at the camera in the passenger seat while driving his car, T’Swan’s narrative in “Flaws” teaches us to hold onto life despite our individual trials and tribulations: “After all, I got to wake up and spend one more day on this great Earth.”
