Tank God - “Owe You Sum”

Tank God develops his creative style in “Owe U Sum,” a March release. The music video’s visual effects are trippy and outside of the box, with no shortage of distorted camera angles and rapid spinning. The color motif throughout the video keeps it cohesive, with bright yellow featured in Tank God and Tula Yahweh’s clothing and some shots completely awash in a yellow filter. Better known as a producer, Tank God’s talents as a singer and musical artist shine through in this track. His voice is effortlessly smooth, with a unique depth. Tula Yahweh’s feature inserts a refreshing contrast into the song—his voice is coarser than Tank God’s, and his verse injects the song with energy: “Diamonds the color of lemonade / Your neck turn green I can tell they fade.” The lyricism centers on material wealth, referencing luxury brands like Cartier and status symbols like Lamborghinis. While songs highlighting money and wealth aren’t hard to come by, “Owe U Sum” is a catchy spin on the theme. The lyrics and music video in concert with each other paint a picture of an ideal lifestyle.

One of the most impressive parts of the video is its ability to transform everyday settings into a picture of luxury. One recurring scene depicts Tank God and Tula Yahweh in the parking lot in front of a taco restaurant. While this backdrop isn’t necessarily glamorous, the rapid-fire shots and slew of visual effects lend a layer of luxe to the video. Moreover, Tank God takes this track beyond the realm of aesthetics with the central line of the song: “Don’t look at me like I owe you sum.” He thus establishes himself as an artist aware of his worth and talent. Owing his success to no one else, he’s achieved wealth and status—“Hard to see the waves with these Cartiers on my eyes”—and deserves every bit of it. While perhaps initially better known as a producer, in this collaboration Tank God proves himself as an artist well worth your attention.
