Savaya - “Hear You”

Showcasing the natural beauty of its setting first and foremost, Savaya’s music video for “Hear You” vibrates with color and life. As written onscreen in the opening shot, the video takes place in the “deep jungle” of Central America. Pans of verdant foliage, both close-up and from far overhead, dominate this visual experience. The edges of each shot are blurred, a simple effect that lends a degree of mysticism to the video. Savaya himself dresses in an all-white ensemble accented by a wispy red scarf, exuding a sense of tranquility. By contrast, the woman in the video wears jean shorts, a dark grey crop top, and a simple necklace. The woman’s journey through the jungle is interspersed with shots of Savaya, surrounded by dancers on the beach.

We watch the woman enter the jungle, barefoot and seemingly intimidated by the towering foliage above her. The sun filters through the leaves as she makes her way deeper into the jungle until she reaches a colorfully painted animal mask. She meets a shaman donned in a similar mask and drinks from a cup of steaming liquid. The experience is intoxicating and spiritually rich, and the video captures the scene with visual effects. The prior scenes are played in reverse, with the woman moving backwards out of the jungle and back to where she started. Simultaneously, the shots speed up and the music picks up its pace and continues its repetition of the lines, “I can hear you, I can hear you.” While the song grows lyrically repetitive, the music video enhances Savaya’s reverberating voice and emphasizes the song’s spiritual focus. He seems to be directing his words to a higher power, clasping his hands in prayer and looking towards the sky. Certain words echo at the end of each line in the song, a musical choice that prompts the listener to absorb every word. In this way, “Hear You” is both accessible in its meaning and catchy in its musicality. However, it is the music video’s unique storytelling and sense of place that sets this track apart—just as we watch the woman embark on a mystical trek into the jungle, Savaya takes us on a journey unlike any other.
