Mike Rollins - Saxophonist

I’m Mike Rollins, a saxophonist, host, and entertainer. Music is my outlet to share my soul with others, listen closely & you will feel something powerful.

Q: What got you interested in music, let alone playing an instrument?

I grew up in church, my father was a preacher & music was a strong foundation in my household. My Mother actually guided me into playing the sax. I played in church as well as school. Then it developed into so much more. As I grew in music I learned that my instrument had a voice, and you can speak through it. Most people do not take the time to really hear music, there are so many moving parts and voices in a song. I like to dissect each song and study the loving parts. It makes for interesting listening.

Q: What made you pick up the saxophone? How did you learn how to play?

I started as a drummer but all my cousins played the drums. I needed something to call my own.

I actually learned to play by ear from a young lady that played sax as well in my church. I give her so much credit for the ear training & technique.

Q: Would you or do you play any other instruments? If you could or would, what would you play?

As I mentioned. I played the drums, but if I could venture off a bit it would be piano next.

Q: How did it feel when you had you are first sold-out show?

Honestly, I appreciated the love & support, but I do me regardless of the crowd. I have always said: “It doesn’t matter if it’s 5 or 5,000, I’m going to give you the same experience.” It is an expression from my soul, and I can dial that back once it is released.

Q: What do you like the most about performing?

The bond you make on stage with your fellow band members. Music brings people together, we can be five strangers, but if we’re locked in as “one” musically, we are now brothers & sisters.

Q: What is something that has challenged you in your career?

Time. My life is more than music, so balancing my job, daughter, and time for music can be a challenge, but no excuses. If you want it, go get it.

Q: What was the coolest event you have played for, so far?

I would say the 2019 NFL Hall of Fame. Playing in front of all of the superstars I watched growing up was electric.

Q: Who would you say is the best saxophonist?

There are many influences in different styles, but I would have to say Charlie Parker still holds the crown.

Q: How would you describe your style of music? What makes your music yours?

R&B Neo-Soul vibe…. I like to add my touch to a song & really give you me. It hits differently when played by the sax!

Q: What is your favorite song to do a cover of and why?

Musiq Soulchild- So Beautiful

The words of the song resonate with me & every time I play it I feel something different. It is powerful and the arrangement is crazy. Come listen for yourself sometime.
