Q: How old were you when you realized music was what you wanted to do? What was your journey with music?

A: As a kid, I always loved singing. My parents sang together a lot at church’s/weddings and I always loved how they would harmonize with each other. My dad also used to perform cover songs at restaurants and bars when he was younger which is what I ended up doing for a while. Although I never really thought I would be able to do it professionally, the doors started opening up for me when I was finally to be able to record and produce songs around 2016. It is been a crazy journey of ups and downs since then and I love being afforded the opportunity to make an impact on people through my music.

Q: What instruments do you play?

A: I started out with the piano, then guitar. I play by ear and in my honest opinion, I’m not that great at either but I think I have a unique way that I play. I also play ukulele and bass.

Q: On your recently released EP, what is your most powerful song? What is your favorite song?

A: I would say the most powerful song on the EP is Angels. It is a reminder that even through the darkest of times there are forces of love and light in this world that help us pull through. And my favorite song is probably Free Fall because it features my son, Isaiah’s vocals in the beginning. And the production/creation of that song was so spontaneous, mysterious, and beautiful :)

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give younger musicians, like yourself?

A: Write every day. Do not get discouraged if it takes a while for things to get going. Live a creative life, get weird, be authentically yourself.

Q: What do you think is most important when adding graphics to your videos?

A: My friend, Nate Giordano does all my graphics and it always adds a special flare. He is very in tune with my music and it shows. He also does all my song art.

Q: What do you like most about the platform YouTube?

A: I love YouTube as a consumer of content, as well as a creator of content. I feel like visuals + music are a match made in Heaven… One of my most popular songs, Honey, gained a ton of organic traction thanks to YouTube.

Q: Why do you think it’s important to touch on things happening around you, in your music?

A: I do not really consciously choose to do that, it more-so just happens by default. I do not have an artist name, I go by Johnny Balik. I have never wanted to create a persona or write music that isn’t straight from the heart. So as a result, my music is directly correlated with who I am, what I believe, and the lens through which I see the world around me… My only goal is that the music that comes from it will be filled with love, joy, and hope.
