Hazy Shea X Jae Lynx - “Secrecy”

“Secrecy,” an anticipated collab between Hazy Shea and Jae Lynx, manages to seamlessly blend the artists’ drastically different musical styles into a visually and musically cohesive piece. The song starts out with Hazy Shea, and we watch her shoulder her way through dancing crowds at a party: “Let’s leave this room / It’s way too crowded.” She pulls one girl away from the party in between shots of laughing partygoers basked in pink and purple light. It is then that the video takes on an ethereal quality, leaving the party and turning towards underwater shots of the singer, purple bubbles spilling out of her mouth. At just over a minute in, Jae Lynx adds his voice to the mix. While we might identify Jae Lynx by his lighthearted, upbeat tracks, “Secrecy” is an artistic divergence. However, Lynx effortlessly adapts to this new style, and his voice blends with Shea’s as they trade lines.

On a lyrical level, the song grapples with toxic relationships and control. As captured in the oft-repeated line, “I’ve been dealin’ with your secrecy,” relationships that lack trust and transparency are bound to fail. Shea and Lynx convey this idea with wisdom beyond their years. In one clip towards the end of the song, Hazy Shea stands before a fishbowl lens and sings: “My thoughts keep on surfacing.” Bright pink light illuminates half of her face, and she wears a backward baseball cap and a silver necklace with a “22” pendant. Her eyes, framed by dark liner, demand the viewer’s attention and lend even greater gravity to the lyrics. In this way, the video strikes a careful balance between intense and youthful, serious and playful. The jewel-toned lighting and glittery makeup come across as visual exaggerations of the video’s house party setting; red solo cups held skyward feature prominently in the first few shots. The lyrics, on the other hand, are almost sinister. Beyond the effortless combination of both artists’ musical abilities, it is this tension that initially grabbed my attention and thematically sets “Secrecy” apart. More than anything, this collab has further proven each artist’s talent, whether together or apart.
