Green Day-“One Eyed Bastard”
Vigorously riffed and electrifyingly ambient, Green Day's latest single, "One Eyed Bastard," is another top-notch punk anthem. The track delves into a place of vendetta and revenge while the lyrics violently explore the thoughts of internal anger. In the pre-chorus, Billie Joe sings, "Vendetta is a friend of mine/Revenge is sweeter than wine/I never asked to hear your god-damned feelings/Get on your knees when you are kissing my ring," which becomes the song's hook while illuminating the instrumental background, initiating a nostalgic vibe from their song "Holiday" from their 2004 debut album, "American Idiot."
The aggressive feel continues throughout the chorus' repetitive shouting phrase, "Bada bing, bada bing, bada boom," as the shout-along nature is nothing new coming from Green Day. Also, listening to the track's instrumentals, the band's signature sound, as far as the bass line played by Mike, continues to add character and depth. These features also showcase that though the band returns to a new era of the music industry, they keep their sound without feeling worn out of their style while still amplifying an instrumental display of rock.
In the band's accompanying music video, the visuals portray an emo cartoon display with pink, black, and white color coordination. The video opens with a light bulb graphic hanging from the top of the screen as the music begins to play, soon aligning perfectly in motion with a flashlight effect showcasing a male cartoon that similarly depicts Billie Joe. As the video continues, similar ideas from their "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" music video can be seen, such as the car and the singer walking down a highway. The video also makes excellent use of the Mickey Mouse copyright cartoon throughout the music video, adding a classic compliment.
While the new track delivers a nostalgic Green Day sound, the influences of their previous work are apparent. The music elements contributed from a different period at the same time, adding a new tune to generate a fresh feel for the trio, which is inviting, making their upcoming album, "Saviors," an exciting musical experience to look forward to.
