Samara Cyn - “Time”

“Time,” Samara Cyn’s October 2021 music video release, exudes the effortless warmth of late summer. Every shot has the rosy tint of golden hour, with clips throughout the video filtered as though recorded with a vintage camera. This effect lends a certain intimacy to the video’s visual narrative; one such shot depicts Cyn’s hand outstretched and reaching towards a man’s hand. Yet just as the two hands are about to touch, his floats down and just out of reach—almost reminiscent of Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. Yet instead of one hand giving life to the other, in this scene, one remains untouchable and elusive to the other.

Samara Cyn’s lyrics beautifully weave together this story, particularly in her repetition of, “I don’t ask for much, I just want time.” Over the course of the song, this line sounds increasingly helpless, yet never desperate. The line “Baby I just want” reverberates in the background later in the song. The use of the word “just” is most impactful here. It highlights the fact that her request is not a large one, but merely the bare minimum: “Just gimme the green light… Just pencil me in your schedule.” Within the framework of a relationship, time is the most crucial building block, a fact that makes Cyn’s anthem all the more bittersweet. She may not be “ask[ing] for much,” but she is asking for something important. Her plea, notably written in the second person directly to her love interest, is made more relatable by the video’s visuals. While Samara Cyn is the focus, the man who sporadically appears is never fully shown. We see nothing beyond a glimpse of his profile before his arms envelop her waist. This choice renders the male character anonymous and shifts our attention back to the singer herself, submerging us as viewers in her words and emotions.
