Jae Lynx - “Floss My Teeth”
Jae Lynx continues to impress in his latest release, “Floss My Teeth.” The track is short and the accompanying music video is playful and trippy. The first few shots depict chattering pairs of dentures superimposed on city streets and buildings, thus setting the stage for a video unlike any other. As the camera zooms into the window of one particular building, we enter a world of dreamlike colors, moving paintings, and hypnotizing patterns everywhere we look. One especially entrancing scene shows Lynx awash in magenta light, with gaping white holes where his eyes should be. A mind-bending spiral of black and white stripes spins behind him, yet he continues to sing just as in every other scene. He appears at one with his environment, regardless of how wacky or unreal it may seem. The video’s experimentation with colors and props seems like a way of capturing Lynx’s very energy. He jumps up and down, embodying joy and enthusiasm that can be hard to come by. His gestures and dance moves feel natural rather than forced, reflecting his authenticity and freshness as an artist.
The backing track to “Floss My Teeth” is bright and upbeat, almost blending with Lynx’s voice at the beginning of the song. His lyrics are at first somewhat unintelligible and his voice starts out muffled. Other than the words “floss my teeth,” his words are difficult to distinguish. However, when the beat drops at the 40-second mark, his voice comes emerges from the backing track and takes center stage. Much like the visuals, his lyrics are playful: “Hop outta bed, floss my teeth, yeah, yeah.” A repeating part of the chorus, which opens and closes the song, consists solely of Lynx repeating the line “Now, now, now, now.” The rhythmic chanting of the word over and over again forms a consistent beat at the song’s beginning and end, and the repetition takes on the quality of an echo. The musical and visual choices of both the song and the video feel like a new step in the development of Jae Lynx’s artistic style. “Floss My Teeth” is unique and fun, and I can’t wait to see where Lynx goes next.
