D_Shaun -“Take Off From Here”
D_Shaun’s newly released music video for “Take Off From Here” is a cinematic experience. It captures not only a love story but a dream of escape. The video opens with a man and a woman walking to the couch, hands clasped and making what looks like a flirty conversation. But soon the camera pans to a black-clothed figure darting around the perimeter of the house, gun in hand. The woman peers out the windows, in search of something, while her companion talks animatedly beside her. The lyrics begin just as the intruder shoots the man inside in the head; he collapses to the ground and then the song is underway. For obvious reasons, this intro will immediately catch your attention. The girl stands up and removes her undercover police badge before D_Shaun takes over the screen, singing to the camera before a desolate backdrop of desert and junk. The video takes you on a journey, telling the story of the couple skipping town and, ultimately, D_Shaun having a dramatic shoot-out with the cops while holding the woman captive in his grip. It closes out with a shot of the two of them in a convertible headed who-knows-where.
The detailed storyline of the video puts a new twist on the song, whose lyrics express a desire to “take off from here” and leave everything behind. D_Shaun describes his dream of getting away, “me and you against the world.” The lyrics are romantic and idealistic, capturing a perfect future that seems just out of reach. But against the visuals of the video, the song takes on a whole new edge; this, I think, is what makes it shine. A great music video tells you a story and builds off of the song’s foundation, and this is exactly what you’ll get with “Take Off From Here.” That being said, the song is more than catchy as a standalone. D_Shaun delivers one impeccable rhyme after another—video or not, this one belongs on repeat.
