Cam Blair - “Pick It Up”
"While relatively simple on a musical level, Cam Blair’s “Pick it Up” lives up to the promise of its title—upbeat and lively. Blair, dressed in a patterned button-down, chunky silver jewelry, and statement sunglasses, creates a persona on the screen that oozes with confidence. The lyrics focus on wealth and physical pleasure: “Cash on the floor / Pick it up and get some more.” Likewise, the video itself is visually appealing with its use of bright background lights and dollar bills carpeting the floor. It’s an anthem meant to be enjoyed, one that praises the status and privileges that money provides. Blair is backed by a small group of men and women, the women dressed in colorful velour sweatsuits that fit the casual, playful energy of the video. In between shots of the group dancing, money flying through the air around them, we see both solo shots of Cam Blair and of one of the women dancing before orange- and blue-lit backgrounds. This dynamic echoes the sexual references that Blair effortlessly weaves into his song: “Lovin’ how she dance / Thinkin’ I should take a chance / ‘Cause I’m studying her body like a clinical exam.”
The cadence of Blair’s singing and the reliable rhyme scheme of each verse makes “Pick it Up” a song worth putting on repeat. The tempo is steady throughout the duration of the song, and his vocals occupy a space somewhere between singing and rapping. The fast pace and rhythmic repetition will instantly get stuck in your head, and with his clever lyricism, Blair will manage to keep you coming back. Beyond his apt choice of clothing and accessories, he exudes both pride and carelessness: “Used to give a fuck / Now I don’t even give a damn.” While scores of singers take on similar themes in their work—wealth, power, sex—Blair manages to put his own unique spin on familiar subjects. It’s this musical flair that makes “Pick it Up” so catchy and that, surely, will bring Blair future success. "
